We started a trip with chocolate croissants and a coffee from Nomadic Bike Café and headed out to arrive at our destination, the old port of Ghar El Melh.
There we tried delicious bread with tuna and sardines called kaskrout lablebi and had a coffee with a view of the old port. While enjoying the coffee and the view we played Chkobba, a famous and traditional Tunisian card game.Then, we headed to the beach at Sidi Ali El Mekki. We went for a short swim and then prepared for the trek to the top of the hill, walked for around 3.5 hours and enjoyed an incredible view of the coast the whole way.
We stopped in an old fortress, admired the view of blueish water hitting the coast and met a donkey then ran down the dunes to get back to the beach.
Jumping into the water for refreshing swimming and headed to Bizerte.
In Bizerte we went for a delicious “kounefa كونافا”. It’s sweet and prepared with yellow cheese. I loved it so much, probably could been the best sweet I have tried, for sure the best I have tried in Tunisia so far. It’s 6 dinars. It is typical of this region of Tunisia and difficult to find in another part of this beautiful country. We went for dessert called “kes tay baklawa.” It’s also typical for this region of Tunisia. We drank the typical green tea with a lot of nuts and ate sweet baklawa. After that, we walked around the old port of Bizerte, admired the night light’s reflection on the water, and headed back to Nomadic Bike.
It was an amazing day and the food of the Bizarte region was amazing, so delicious, that I can’t wait to visit this place again for my culinary journey in Tunisia. This part of Tunisia is not very well known to tourists from outside of Tunisia but Tunisians love this place so much and travel to Bizerte’s numerous beaches during summer.
We were very lucky because we visited this place after summer so we could enjoy the beach just for ourselves and the weather was still very nice.
This part of Tunisia should be well-known and recommended for visiting due to its rich and delicious culinary offer, amazing, calm, and clean beaches, beautiful mountains, amazing green plants and trees, and climatic old ports.
