Getting oriented in Konak, Izmir

Grâce à Selim’s research, we found an AirBnB with great reviews in Konak, Izmir. We booked it for 12 USD (208 TL) per night through the website for a few days. Our plan was not to have a plan. Just to meet up, enjoy some time together, and decide what to do from there. In the apartment in Izmir, we had two flat mates and shared the common space which included a kitchen, bathroom, balcony, and living area. Our roommates worked at their offices so we had the place to ourself for most of the day.

Can’t complain about the neighbors

After a few days, we had developed a bit of a schedule. During the day, I would teach English online while Selim would create YouTube videos. At night, we went out to hunt la bouffe turc and explore the city. We also took care of some to-do’s like buying a simcard.* There is a beautiful bike path along the sea which we took advantage of by getting a bikeshare card (BizimKart) for me to rent a bike.

Selim had brought his bicycle with him from Tunis so his only challenge was getting it up and down the huge hill from our apartment to the Corniche.

We were enjoying our time in Izmir and I wasn’t keen on moving too soon, so we agreed to pay around 9-10 USD a night and to stay an extra week.

Çay and borek for Selim, Kahve turc and boyoz for Alyssa

* We ended up choosing Turkcell. They have a tourist package which is 149 TL (8.60 USD) per month pre-paid for 20GB data. We also bought a simcard which was around 300 TL (18 USD).
